Amazon Web Services (AWS) is now recognized as the most comprehensive and mature cloud computing platform on the market. Launched by Amazon, this infrastructure enables businesses of all sizes to deploy, manage, and scale their applications without investing in physical hardware. AWS offers more than 200 different services covering the full range of IT needs: from basic web hosting to the most advanced artificial intelligence solutions.
AWS's strength lies in its exceptional flexibility and pay-as-you-go pricing model. You pay only for what you use, which allows startups and large enterprises alike to control their costs while benefiting from enterprise-grade infrastructure. This revolutionary approach has transformed the way organizations design and deploy their information systems.
The AWS ecosystem covers the entire spectrum of modern technology. From traditional hosting to emerging technologies such as machine learning and the Internet of Things, the platform offers ready-to-use solutions that integrate seamlessly with one another. This architectural consistency allows technical teams to build complex systems without worrying about compatibility between different components.
The AWS ecosystem continues to evolve rapidly with the regular addition of new services and features. This constant innovation, combined with the proven reliability of the infrastructure, explains why so many companies rely on AWS for their critical projects and digital transformation.
Amazon Web Services offers a complex pricing model based on actual usage, with prices that vary depending on the services used and the geographic regions. The platform provides a generous free tier to get started, then charges on a pay-as-you-go basis with volume-based discounts.
Unlike traditional SaaS solutions, AWS does not offer fixed monthly subscriptions but bases its billing on actual resource usage, allowing for precise cost optimization based on your actual needs.
| Plan | Rates | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Free Tier | Free (12 months) | 750 hours of EC2 t2.micro instances, 5 GB of S3 storage, 25 GB of DynamoDB, and 20 GB of RDS |
| EC2 t3.micro | $0.0104 per hour | 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, network up to 5 Gbps |
| EC2 t3.medium | $0.0416 per hour | 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, network up to 5 Gbps |
| S3 Standard | $0.023 per GB per month | Object storage, 99.999999999% durability |
| Lambda | $0.0000166667 per GB-second | 1 million free requests per month, serverless execution |
| RDS MySQL t3.micro | $0.017 per hour | 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB storage included |
AWS pricing is based on several components that add up depending on your usage. EC2 instancesare often the main expense, with prices ranging from a few cents to several dollars per hour depending on the required computing power. t3.nano instances start at $0.0052 per hour, while high-performance instances such as c5n.18xlarge can reach $3.888 per hour. This granularity allows you to precisely adjust your costs according to the needs of each application.
S3 storage offers several pricing tiers tailored to different use cases. S3 Standard charges $0.023 per GB per month for frequent access, S3 Standard-IA drops to $0.0125 for infrequent access, and S3 Glacier Deep Archive offers long-term archiving for just $0.00099 per GB per month. Data transfer fees apply, with the first 100 GB of outbound data free each month, followed by $0.09 per GB up to 10 TB.
AWS Lambda is revolutionizing billing with its serverless model. You pay only for the time your code runs, billed in 1-millisecond increments. With 1 million free requests per month and 400,000 GB-seconds of compute time included, Lambda remains very cost-effective for applications with variable workloads. Beyond that, each million requests costs $0.20 and each GB-second of compute time costs $0.0000166667.
RDS databases use a pricing model similar to EC2 instances, with additional costs for storage and backups. A db.t3.micro MySQL instance costs $0.017 per hour, while a db.r5.24xlarge instance can cost up to $6.048 per hour. gp2 storage costs an additional $0.115 per GB per month, with provisioned IOPS billed separately if needed.
AWS offers several highlycost-effective optimizationmechanisms. Reserved Instances provide discounts of up to 75% with a 1- or 3-year commitment, making them ideal for predictable workloads. Spot Instances offer discounts of up to 90% if you accept that your instances may be interrupted, making them perfect for batch processing or development environments. Savings Plans provide additional flexibility with discounts of up to 72% on EC2 and Lambda.
AWS billingcan quickly become complex due to its many components. For example, an EC2 instance incurs costs for compute, attached EBS storage, network transfers, and potentially Elastic IP addresses. The AWS Cost Explorer and Budgets tools are essential for monitoring and forecasting your expenses. Cost Explorer offers free analytics, while advanced budgets cost $0.02 per budget day after the first two free days.
Some AWS services offer particularly generous permanent free tiers. DynamoDB provides 25 GB of storage and 25 free read/write capacity units lifetime. CloudWatch includes 10 custom metrics and 5 GB of logs for free each month. These allowances make it possible to run lightweight applications without recurring costs, which is ideal for personal projects or prototypes.
Network transfer fees are often a surprise on AWS bills. Inbound transfers are free, but outbound transfers to the internet cost $0.09 per GB after the first 100 GB of free data per month. Transfers between AWS regions are billed at $0.02 per GB, while transfers within the same availability zone remain free. This pricing structure encourages optimization of the network architecture.
For businesses, AWS offers customized discount programs and promotional credits. The AWS Activate program provides up to $100,000 in credits startups, while large enterprises can negotiate Enterprise Discount Programs that offer discounts on their total usage. These programs often include dedicated technical support and architectural consulting services.
Cost monitoring is critical with AWS due to its pay-as-you-go billing model. Free billing alerts allow you to receive email notifications when your costs exceed defined thresholds. AWS Trusted Advisor, included with Business and Enterprise support, automatically analyzes your infrastructure to identify potential optimizations and underutilized resources, leading to substantial savings.
